Alpinestars brings Tech-Air MX airbags to downhill mountain biking

The Alpinestars Tech-Air MX downhill airbag has moved from World Cup testing into public sale, bringing autonomous crash detection and inflatable upper-body protection to mountain biking. The £569.99 system uses a downhill-specific algorithm to decide when a rider has lost control, then deploys around the shoulders, chest, back and upper arms before impact.

It is a significant development for MTB protection. Airbag systems are established in motorcycle racing, but downhill creates a different detection problem: riders move far more over the bike, jump, drop, slide and absorb repeated terrain impacts that must not be mistaken for a crash.

How the Alpinestars Tech-Air MX downhill airbag works

The self-contained system uses six sensors and does not require a tether, GPS unit or sensor mounted to the bike. Alpinestars says the airbag inflates approximately 32–45 milliseconds after crash detection, depending on size. That is fast enough to create coverage before the rider reaches the ground in the crash scenarios for which the algorithm has been developed.

Passive Level 1 chest and back protection remains in place when the airbag is not deployed. Once inflated, the system adds coverage around areas that are difficult to protect with rigid armour without restricting movement, including the shoulders and upper arms.

Alpinestars claims up to an 82 per cent reduction in transmitted impact energy compared with a conventional passive chest protector. That is a manufacturer figure rather than an Electric MTB UK test result, but it explains why the technology has attracted attention inside World Cup downhill.

Developed with downhill riders since 2022

The dedicated MTB algorithm is the important part of the launch. Alpinestars began collecting downhill data in 2022 and used professional riders to record normal riding movements, unstable moments and genuine crashes. The company says 17 riders contributed more than 200 hours of data and the system has already deployed in competition crashes.

Specialized Factory Racing, Team GEN-S, Mondraker Factory Racing and Santa Cruz Goodman riders have used the technology. That race exposure does not make the product infallible, but it gives the detection system a much more credible foundation than transferring a motocross setting straight onto a mountain bike.

Battery life, re-use and servicing

The Alpinestars Tech-Air MX downhill airbag has a claimed battery life of up to 30 hours. A full charge takes approximately four hours, while a one-hour top-up is said to provide around eight hours of riding. Bluetooth connection to the Tech-Air app is used for riding modes, system status, diagnostics and firmware updates.

The airbag can be repacked after a deployment, provided it has not been damaged. Alpinestars states that the system is certified for up to six deployments before a service is required. Riders still need to inspect it after any significant impact and follow the official repacking and servicing process rather than treating it like an ordinary foam protector.

Transport and returns also need thought because the system contains gas inflators. Alpinestars says customers cannot simply post Tech-Air products back themselves under dangerous-goods transport rules; returns and servicing must go through an approved hub after contacting customer care.

Who is the Tech-Air MX for?

At 1.6kg claimed and £569.99, this is not an obvious replacement for the lightweight back protector used on an ordinary trail ride. It is aimed much more clearly at downhill racing, bike-park laps and riders accepting extra weight and complexity in exchange for another layer of upper-body protection.

For eMTB riders, the crossover is most relevant on gravity-focused bikes used for repeated park laps or e-enduro terrain. Motor assistance makes it easier to repeat descents, but it does not reduce crash speed or impact energy. Availability and an important compatibility point

The Tech-Air MX with the Downhill Algorithm launched in Europe on 26 August 2026 and is listed at £569.99 on the Alpinestars UK site. Availability through authorised dealers is expected to expand after launch.

Current buyers need to check the exact unit rather than assuming every older Tech-Air MX can run the downhill mode. Launch reporting states that systems bought before 1 September 2026 may not be eligible for the downhill algorithm for certification and legal reasons. Anyone buying dealer stock should ask for written confirmation that the unit supports the MTB Downhill mode.

Why this launch matters

Mountain bike protection normally evolves by making passive armour lighter, better ventilated or more flexible. The Alpinestars Tech-Air MX downhill airbag takes a different route: it adds active protection that changes state when the system identifies a crash.

The price, weight, charging and servicing demands will keep it specialist for now. The bigger story is that active airbag protection has crossed into a public MTB product after several seasons of data collection and race use. If detection proves dependable outside elite racing, similar systems could eventually become more common in downhill, enduro and high-speed eMTB riding.
