The best bike grease is the one specified for the job, rather than the most expensive tube on the shelf. An MTB workshop may need assembly grease, a bearing grease or a specialist seal lubricant, but those are not interchangeable labels. This guide compares eight orderable UK options and explains where each fits.
These are researched recommendations, not a comparative laboratory or trail test. Prices were checked on 30 September 2026 and exclude unconfirmed delivery charges. Follow the service instructions for your exact component, especially around suspension, hubs and dropper posts.
Best Overall: Peaty’s Bicycle Assembly Grease
For routine assembly points that call for bicycle grease, the 100g Peaty’s tube is our overall starting point at £6.99. It combines a manageable quantity with an accessible price. Riders needing a named specialist lubricant should go straight to that product instead.

Peaty’s Bicycle Assembly Grease — 100g
Peaty’s Bicycle Assembly Grease — 100g
A sensibly priced starting point for routine assembly jobs where the component maker specifies grease. Its water-washout resistance is relevant to wet UK riding, while the small tube is easier to keep clean than an open workshop tub.

Why it makes the shortlist
Choose this if you want one assembly grease rather than a collection of overlapping general-purpose products. It is not a recommendation to grease every bolt: a fitting may instead require dry assembly, threadlocker, carbon compound or another specified product.

Fenwicks Assembly Grease — 80ml
Fenwicks Assembly Grease — 80ml
The lowest-priced option here is a compact assembly grease for occasional workshop use. A small tube makes sense if you service one bike and would rather buy only what you need.

+ Pros
- Low initial cost
- Compact 80ml tube
- Designed for assembly and corrosion protection
− Cons
- Smaller pack than several alternatives
- Not a specialist suspension grease

Why it makes the shortlist
A practical budget choice for riders building a basic maintenance kit. Judge value against how much you will actually use; the millilitre pack size should not be compared directly with gram-labelled tubes without knowing density.

Peaty’s Speed Grease — 100g
Peaty’s Speed Grease — 100g
Speed Grease is the bearing-focused option in Peaty’s range, aimed at wheel bearings and bottom brackets. It earns a separate place because that role differs from the brand’s assembly grease; it is not a promise of a faster bike.

- Clearly defined bearing-service role
- 100g tube
- M15 dispenser compatibility
− Cons
- Overlaps with other bearing greases
- Does not make sealed bearings user-serviceable

Why it makes the shortlist
Consider this when the bearing service procedure calls for a suitable grease and you prefer a separate bearing product. Do not pry open a cartridge solely to use it; many worn or contaminated sealed bearings are replaced rather than repacked.

Park Tool PPL-1 PolyLube 1000 — 4oz
Park Tool PPL-1 PolyLube 1000 — 4oz
PolyLube is Park Tool’s general bicycle grease, offered here in a manageable 4oz tube. It is an alternative to the assembly picks for a workshop that follows component-specific service instructions.

+ Pros
- General bicycle maintenance focus
- Resealable tube
- Moisture-resistant formulation
− Cons
- No reason to buy it alongside another suitable general grease
- Specialist components may specify a different lubricant

Why it makes the shortlist
Choose PPL-1 for a general workshop supply, rather than assuming that a more expensive specialist grease must be better for every job. Keep the nozzle clean and use the lubrication instructions for the part being serviced.

Finish Line Ceramic Grease — 2oz tube
Finish Line Ceramic Grease — 2oz tube
This small tube is an option for riders seeking Finish Line’s ceramic grease formulation. Tredz listed it at £8.99 with supplier dispatch in 3–4 working days, so it is less suitable for a repair needed immediately.

At Tredz
Teflon Ceramic Grease, 2oz tube; not the separate 100g product
+ Pros
- Compact tube
- Distinct ceramic-grease formulation
- Orderable supplier option
− Cons
- Supplier dispatch rather than shelf stock
- Do not confuse this listing with the newer 100g pack

Why it makes the shortlist
Check the pack and formulation before ordering because similarly named listings are not necessarily identical. Use it only where the component maker permits this type of grease; a ceramic label does not establish compatibility with every bearing or seal.

SRAM Butter Grease — 1oz
SRAM Butter Grease — 1oz
SRAM Butter is a specialist service product, not an all-purpose replacement for assembly grease. Buy it when the exact suspension, dropper or hub service manual names it, checking the component generation before starting.

+ Pros
- Named in specific SRAM and RockShox service procedures
- Small quantity for occasional use
- Distinct specialist role
− Cons
- Not universal across RockShox models or generations
- Small pack for the price

Why it makes the shortlist
This is the right purchase when the manual says SRAM Butter, rather than when a retailer simply labels a job ‘suspension service’. SRAM’s current BoXXer guidance illustrates why generation matters: different versions specify different greases.

Park Tool HPG-1 High Performance Grease — 4oz
Park Tool HPG-1 High Performance Grease — 4oz
HPG-1 is Park Tool’s more specialised bearing grease, including applications involving precision-ground and ceramic bearings. It is a targeted alternative to PPL-1, not an automatic upgrade for every assembly task.

Muc-Off Bio Grease — 150g
Muc-Off Bio Grease — 150g
The 150g Muc-Off tube suits a home workshop that gets through more general bicycle grease. It has the highest purchase price here, so occasional users may be better served by a smaller suitable tube.

+ Pros
- Larger 150g quantity
- Tube keeps unused grease enclosed
- Bicycle maintenance focus
− Cons
- Highest upfront price in this selection
- Larger quantity is unnecessary for some riders

Why it makes the shortlist
Choose the larger pack because your maintenance workload justifies it, not because an eMTB needs a special volume of grease. Keep it away from brake friction surfaces and use separate products wherever the component instructions require them.

Assembly grease, bearing grease and seal grease
Assembly grease helps protect suitable interfaces and makes future disassembly easier. Bearing grease serves a moving contact, while specialist seal greases must match the component’s materials and service procedure. A grease sold for bicycles is not automatically approved for every part of a bicycle.
The important purchase is often a specific service product rather than a general “best”. For example, SRAM Butter is named in particular SRAM and RockShox applications. Check the current manual for your model and generation: a familiar brand name does not guarantee that last year’s lubricant is still specified.
Where should you not put grease?
Keep grease off brake pads and rotor braking surfaces. Do not substitute it for chain lubricant, carbon assembly compound, threadlocker or anti-seize just because the products occupy the same workshop shelf. Carbon interfaces and fasteners may require a particular preparation, including dry assembly, so read the instructions before applying anything.
An eMTB does not need its motor opened or greased as part of routine home cleaning. Leave sealed drive-unit servicing to the manufacturer’s approved procedure and service network. For the chain, use a suitable MTB chain lubricant rather than one of these greases.
Can you repack any bearing?
No. Serviceable cup-and-cone bearings and sealed cartridge bearings are different jobs. Do not prise off seals simply because you have bought a tube of grease; use the bearing and component maker’s service or replacement procedure. Park Tool’s guide to lubricants and compounds is useful background, but the component manual takes priority.
Does grease change tightening torque?
Thread and contact preparation affect how a fastener behaves as it is tightened. Follow both the specified preparation and the torque value for that exact fitting; do not choose one while ignoring the other. Our MTB torque-wrench guide explains the tools for controlled tightening.
Choose a pack you will actually use
A small, clean tube is usually easier to manage than a large open container in an occasional home workshop. Keep the cap and nozzle free of grit, label specialist products clearly and avoid contaminating fresh grease with a dirty brush. Compare like-for-like pack sizes: millilitres and grams are not directly interchangeable without density information.
Start with the maintenance job and its instructions, then buy the suitable product. That is more useful than collecting several general greases that solve the same problem.
