Endura MT500 Burner long-sleeve mountain bike jersey

Best long-sleeve MTB jerseys: 8 picks for trail riding

Long sleeves are useful on a mountain bike well beyond winter. They add coverage on overgrown singletrack, sit neatly over slim elbow pads and spare your arms some of the trail spray. But a mesh riding top and a thermal jersey do very different jobs: sleeve length alone tells you little about warmth.

ELECTRIC MTB UK THE SHORTLIST

Long-sleeve MTB jerseys: the shortlist

Six picks for different fits, temperatures and riding needs. Compare the full cards below.

Our overall choice is the Fox Ranger Fox Head for uncomplicated everyday trail riding. There are also cheaper sale options, a more technical Endura top for backpack rides and a warmer Altura jersey for cool days. The prices below apply to the named colour and size, so check your measurements before chasing a discount.

How to choose a long-sleeve MTB jersey

Start with warmth, not sleeve length. Lightweight mesh jerseys suit active trail riding and can be layered over a base layer when the temperature falls. They are not designed to stop a cold headwind. A thermal design such as the Esker is a more appropriate starting point for cool, dry days, but may be too warm for hard climbs in mild weather.

Check the fit in your riding position. Stand in a slight crouch and reach forward as if holding the bars. The cuffs should still cover your wrists without pulling the shoulders tight, and the back should not ride above your waistband. A loose fit gives room to move; too much spare fabric can flap or bunch under a pack.

Try it with your pads. Slim elbow pads fit under many trail jerseys, but bulky protection needs more sleeve room. Do not assume that buying a size larger fixes a restrictive elbow: it can leave the body too loose. The SingleTrack is deliberately relaxed, while the Burner takes a closer-fitting approach.

Put pockets in perspective. A lift-pass or key pocket is useful, but it is not the same as secure phone storage. Heavy items can swing around in a loose jersey. Carry them in a suitable zipped pocket, hip pack or backpack instead.

Water repellent is not waterproof. A treated panel can help light splashes bead up, but it does not turn a jersey into a rain shell. For a wet ride, choose a waterproof outer layer that fits over your jersey and lets you adjust ventilation on climbs.

Which is best for eMTB riding?

You do not need an eMTB-specific jersey. Choose for the weather, how hard you pedal and the protection you wear. Motor assistance can make an easy climb less demanding, but technical climbs can still be sweaty. On a long descent, a lightweight jersey may feel cold once your effort drops; a packable outer layer gives more flexibility than overdressing for the whole ride.

Is a long-sleeve jersey better than a cotton T-shirt?

For regular riding, a purpose-made top is worth considering for its cut, rear coverage and moisture management. A normal cotton top can be perfectly comfortable on a short, easy ride, but a damp shirt is less pleasant when the weather cools. A technical cotton blend offers a casual feel without being identical to an ordinary cotton T-shirt.

Should you size up for a base layer?

Not automatically. Check the size chart and try the intended combination together. A thin base layer needs little extra room; thick insulation changes the fit much more. Pay particular attention to shoulder movement and elbow-pad clearance rather than choosing solely from your usual casual-clothing size.

Looking after your jersey

Follow the garment label, close any zips before washing and avoid leaving muddy kit bundled in a damp bag. Different fabrics and finishes need different care. Do not assume that the washing or heat instructions for a waterproof jacket also apply to your riding top.
