Leigh Woods is a classic “local legend” riding area for Bristol riders—less a formal trail centre and more a network of bridleways and natural woodland lines. The terrain is defined by limestone geology and steep valley-side gradients, so even short loops can feel punchy. That’s exactly where an eMTB shines: pedal-assist makes repeated climbs manageable and turns Leigh Woods into a viable lap venue for fitness and skills without needing a full day.
Riding here is natural and conditions-dependent. Expect slippery roots, damp hollows and leaf litter in winter, with faster, grippier surfaces in dry spells. The area is also popular with walkers, so it demands careful speed management and polite interaction. If your goal is a tidy, signage-led trail-centre loop, Leigh Woods isn’t that. If you want a near-city off-road ride with a more “wild” feel and plenty of short, intense efforts, it’s an excellent eMTB option.

Facilities

Cost and uplift
No uplift and no trail entry fee. Costs are primarily parking, with the current published tariff shown above.
Bike hire
No on-site hire is listed on the primary visitor information page. Arrange hire elsewhere if needed.
Parking and arrival
Leigh Woods is convenient for quick rides, which also means it’s busy. If you want quieter trails, aim for early mornings or weekdays.
Trails and riding style
Think natural woodland riding rather than purpose-built flow trails. In wet conditions it becomes a traction-management exercise—great for skill-building, slower for lap times.
Facilities
Limited compared to a trail centre. Treat this as self-supported riding.
What to know before you go
Tyre choice matters here. A grippier compound and appropriate pressures help on wet roots and leaf litter. Be especially courteous with other users.
Leigh Woods is well connected for cycling and we’re proud to work closely with charity, Ride Bristol, to support local cycling.
Sustrans
Leigh Woods can be accessed from Route 41 along the River Avon tow path. Explore Leigh Woods on our network of forest roads. Please be considerate of other forest visitors.
Yer Tiz trail
This blue grade mountain bike trail features berms (banked corners), rollers (bumps), and drops and climbs. Yer Tiz is suitable for beginners who have mastered the basics of off road cycling. For more experience riders, there are opportunities to challenge yourself with optional red grade sections and the Keener Skills loop.
Please ride cautiously, giving way to other woodland users where the trail crosses paths. Expect to meet other people enjoying the woods, including walkers, dog walkers and children. Helmets must always be worn when riding.
