Macclesfield Forest (Trentabank / Ridgegate area)

Macclesfield Forest is firmly in the “natural riding” camp, and it’s one of the better Cheshire options if you want terrain that feels closer to Peak District mountain biking than to manicured trail-centre loops. The riding is typically built from bridleways and classic forest tracks, with short, steep climbs and descents that can feel deceptively physical on a normal bike. On an eMTB, that same stop-start terrain becomes far more enjoyable: you can ride more of the climbs seated, repeat punchy efforts without blowing up, and string together bigger loops that link woodland with open-edge riding.

What Macclesfield doesn’t offer is formal grading, on-site management, or “follow the arrows” trail-centre simplicity. You’ll get the best day by planning a route in advance and keeping expectations aligned with UK bridleway reality: mud in winter, variable drainage, and the occasional rocky/rooty surprise. If you like the idea of earning your descents and riding real surfaces rather than built features, Macclesfield Forest is an excellent eMTB choice.

Facilities

Cost and uplift

No uplift and no entry fee. Parking is the only likely on-site cost, and tariffs should be checked at the machine/signage.

Bike hire

No on-site hire.

Parking and arrival

Trentabank and nearby parking can be busy, especially in good weather. Arrive early and park considerately.

Trails and riding style

Expect bridleway riding with Peak District edge character: short steep climbs, rocky patches, and conditions that change quickly with rain.

Facilities

Limited compared to a trail centre. Plan to be self-sufficient.

What to know before you go

In wet weather, grip and braking control matter more than speed. Consider knee protection if you’re pushing into more technical lines.
