Swinley is one of the South East’s best-known MTB trail networks and it’s a proper “go-to” option for Berkshire when you want consistent riding without needing uplift or a huge mountain day. The network is popular because it’s accessible, rideable year-round and suits a broad range of riders: you can keep it mellow on the easier routes, or build a quicker, more technical-feeling ride by linking trail sections and bridleways.
Expect classic southern woodland singletrack—roots, short climbs, short descents and plenty of opportunities to work on flow and cornering. Because it’s a busy multi-user forest, etiquette matters: be especially considerate near trailheads and on shared tracks.
For eMTB riders, Swinley makes a lot of sense because you can comfortably extend the ride, add extra loops and keep the pace up without burning the battery on long road transitions. There is also a bike-focused hub in the area which can make visits easier for people travelling in (hire/support may be available, but confirm current services). Swinley is not a commercial bike park in the uplift sense, but it is one of the most reliable “trail centre style” days you’ll get in the region.

Facilities

Cost and uplift
No uplift. Entry is generally free, with costs typically tied to parking and any optional hire/tuition. Because tariffs and operators can change, it’s best to treat the visitor hub as the “source of truth” on the day.
Bike hire
Hire availability can be seasonal and operator-led. If you need hire (especially eMTB hire), check in advance and book ahead for weekends.
Parking and arrival
Swinley is popular and car parks can fill quickly on weekend mornings and during school holidays. Arriving early improves the experience and reduces congestion around trailheads.
Trails and riding style
Expect trail-centre style loops and “pick-and-mix” riding: short trail segments linked by wide tracks. It’s ideal for repeating favourite sections and for structured skills progression.
Facilities
Facilities vary by hub, but typically include toilets and food/coffee options nearby. Carry water regardless, especially in summer.
What to know before you go
This is a high-traffic riding area. Keep overtakes controlled, be ready for mixed users, and avoid skidding/damaging trails in saturated conditions.
