Crankbrothers Trail Seal shoes target rain running in at the ankle

Crankbrothers has introduced waterproof Stamp and Mallet Trail Speed Lace Seal shoes, with an adjustable ankle wrap aimed at a familiar winter problem: rain and trail spray finding their way into the opening above an otherwise waterproof upper.

The 8 October launch adds flat-pedal and clip-in versions. For eMTB riders planning longer assisted laps through wet undergrowth, the important change is how the shoe meets the lower leg, rather than a different way of attaching to the pedal.

A membrane and a wrap do different jobs

Crankbrothers’ Trail Seal introduction describes a waterproof membrane, low-absorption lining and a 360-degree adjustable ankle wrap. Speed Lace closures provide quick adjustment, while reflective details and TPU reinforcement at the toe complete the wet-weather package.

The wrap is intended to restrict water entering from above. It is still worth considering the whole winter outfit: where a trouser cuff finishes, how the wrap sits against your leg, and whether those layers remain comfortable while pedalling. Our waterproof MTB trousers guide covers the other half of that junction.

Stamp for flats; Mallet for clips

The Stamp Trail Speed Lace Seal uses Crankbrothers’ HYDRO rubber compound and a trail tread designed for traction when walking as well as riding. The brand lists 371g per shoe in EU42. This is the new membrane-equipped Seal model, rather than the original Stamp Trail Lace reviewed here.

The Mallet version retains a cleat recess for a two-bolt clip-in system. Its pedal interface uses MC1 rubber, with HYDRO rubber at the toe and heel. A 35mm cleat track allows a more rearward position. The Mallet product description also identifies a fibre-reinforced nylon shank.

What eMTB owners should weigh up

A grippy walking tread becomes useful when a steep or slippery climb still calls for pushing a heavy bike. On the bike, shoe fit, pedal support and cleat position remain personal decisions. Waterproofing claims do not settle how warm the shoes feel or how quickly a soaked pair dries after repeated rides.

Crankbrothers offers the shoes in Dark Grey/Forest. UK prices and size availability should be checked for the exact Stamp or Mallet version; the two soles serve different pedal systems. Our MTB pedal guide helps match the interface to the riding you do.

The ankle treatment is an interesting answer to an everyday UK winter complaint. Sustained wet-weather use will determine how well it works alongside trousers and socks, and whether the added sealing stays comfortable through a full ride.
