eMTB walk mode explained: how to use walk assist safely

eMTB walk mode is the low-speed motor assistance that helps when you are off the bike and pushing. It is designed for steep ramps, rocky steps, narrow gates and sections too slippery or awkward to ride, where a 23–27kg electric mountain bike can otherwise become a stubborn dead weight.

Walk assist does not turn an eMTB into a self-driving bike. The rider must hold a control, keep both hands on the bike and steer while the motor turns the rear wheel at walking pace. Exact buttons and activation sequences differ by system, so the owner’s manual remains the final authority.

What eMTB walk mode actually does

Most systems provide assistance only while a button is held. Shimano states a maximum of 6km/h for its current STEPS walk assist, while Specialized also describes assistance up to 6km/h. Actual speed can be lower and varies with gear selection, gradient, wheel load and the system’s control logic.

The rear wheel is driven through the normal chain and cassette. That means the selected gear matters. A low climbing gear lets the motor produce controlled wheel torque at a manageable pace; a high gear can make engagement abrupt or leave the motor struggling.

Bosch’s smart-system walk assistance can add Hill Hold when the rider pauses, helping stop the bike rolling backwards. Some Bosch controls also include hill-start assistance, but that is a separate riding function and should not be confused with pushing the bike.

How to use eMTB walk mode on a steep trail

  1. Stop somewhere stable and get off on the uphill side if space allows.
  2. Select a low gear before the bike is wedged against a step. The middle of the largest cassette sprockets is often a controllable starting point.
  3. Stand beside the bike with both hands on the bar. Keep one or two fingers ready on a brake.
  4. Angle the bike up the intended line before activating eMTB walk mode. Do not ask the rear wheel to turn the bike sharply from a standstill.
  5. Use the control sequence shown by the motor-system display or manual, then hold the walk button only when ready to move.
  6. Walk beside the bike rather than behind it. Guide the front wheel and use body position to keep the machine upright.
  7. Release the button before a gate, step edge, person or obstacle. The assistance should stop immediately; cover a brake to control any rollback.

On very steep ground, push from the side with the saddle below the hip rather than trying to drag the handlebar from above. A short dropper-post setting can lower the bike’s centre of mass and create room to move, but do not lower the saddle so far that it catches on rocks or prevents a secure hold.

Choosing the right gear for walk assist

Because the motor drives through the transmission, gear choice changes how eMTB walk mode feels. A large rear sprocket creates more wheel torque and a slower, more controllable pace. That is usually best for rocky steps, loose soil and very steep slopes.

A slightly higher gear can work on a smooth ramp where momentum is useful, but avoid the smallest cassette sprockets. They increase speed, reduce control and place the chain at an angle if the front chainline is already offset.

If the bike is stationary under load, do not force a shift while holding walk assist. Release the button, roll the bike enough to let the chain move, select the gear and then re-engage. Crunching a shift under full motor torque can damage the chain, cassette or derailleur.

Bosch, Shimano and Specialized controls

On many Bosch smart-system remotes, walk assistance is started from the minus button. Bosch describes holding the control and beginning to walk; compatible smart-system setups can engage Hill Hold when movement stops. Older Bosch displays may use a separate walk button followed by the plus control, so copying a sequence from another bike is unreliable.

Current Shimano STEPS instructions tell the rider to stop, hold the lower Y assist button until WALK appears, then press and hold Y again while pushing. Shimano says the mode exits automatically after a period of inactivity and that electronic shifting can alter the assistance through the selected gear.

Specialized Turbo bikes also require the walk-assist control to be held and describe assistance up to 6km/h. The physical button varies across generations of Levo, Kenevo and Tero, so look for the official support page or the manual for the exact remote fitted.

DJI Avinox, Yamaha, TQ, Fazua and Brose-based bikes may use different menus or button holds. The safe principle is the same: identify the control before reaching a difficult slope, test it on level ground and confirm that releasing the button immediately stops assistance.

Using walk assist on mud, rocks and steps

On loose ground, traction is the limit. If the rear tyre spins, holding the button harder will not help. Move the bike so the rear wheel sits on a root-free patch, reduce the selected gear, keep the bike more upright and apply light rear-brake pressure if the motor engagement feels snatchy.

For rock steps, lift the front wheel onto the ledge before applying assistance, then let the rear tyre drive up while you guide the bar. Do not stand directly behind the rear wheel: a spinning tyre can throw stones and the bike can roll back towards your legs.

In deep mud, a clogged rear tread may spin even with perfect technique. Sometimes the safer move is to switch the system off, use both brakes to reposition the bike and find firmer ground. Walk mode is a tool, not an instruction to keep pushing into an unsafe line.

  • Starting in a high gear: engagement can feel fast and uncontrolled.
  • Standing behind the bike: rollback and wheel spin are harder to manage.
  • Turning the bars sharply before activation: the rear wheel pushes the bike sideways.
  • Holding the button through a gate: release early and push manually around people or pinch points.
  • Shifting under motor load: release walk assist before changing gear.
  • Using it without practice: test the exact control and release behaviour on level ground first.

Why walk mode may not work

First check battery charge, display messages and whether the system is fully switched on. Some bikes disable walk assist while charging, after an error or in markets where the function is not enabled. A missing or incompatible handlebar switch can also remove the feature.

Next check gear and wheel movement. A jammed chain, bent derailleur, locked brake or tyre wedged against the frame can make the motor stop to protect itself. Do not keep holding the button against a mechanical blockage.

If the display enters WALK but the motor does not drive, restart the system and test on level ground. Persistent failure belongs with an authorised dealer, particularly if an error code appears. Avoid altering firmware or fitting unofficial controls.

Is eMTB walk mode legal in the UK?

Walk assist on a compliant electric bike is intended to move the bicycle only at walking pace while it is being pushed. It is not the same as a throttle for riding without pedalling. UK e-bike legality depends on the complete EAPC rules, including motor rating, pedal operation and the 15.5mph assistance cut-off, so owners should not treat walk mode as permission to use motor power while seated and not pedalling.

A standard factory system limited to walking speed is normal equipment on UK eMTBs. Derestricting the bike or modifying controls can change its legal status, affect insurance and increase mechanical load.
