Learning how to bed in eMTB brakes is essential after fitting new pads, rotors or both. Controlled stops transfer a thin, even layer of pad material onto the rotor, building consistent friction. Skip the process and a correctly installed brake can still feel weak, noisy or inconsistent.
The exact sequence varies by manufacturer, so use the manual for your brake. SRAM, Magura and Hope all publish their own procedures. The method below is a cautious common baseline for modern hydraulic mountain-bike brakes, followed by the brand-specific details that should take priority.
Before bedding in new eMTB brakes
- Confirm the wheel, rotor, caliper and pads are correctly installed and tightened to the manufacturer’s torque values.
- Keep chain lube, polish, degreaser and dirty cloths away from pads and rotors.
- Choose a flat, dry, traffic-free area with a long clear run-out.
- Wear a helmet and bed one brake at a time so the other remains available for control.
- Stop immediately if the lever reaches the bar, the wheel moves in the frame or the brake behaves unpredictably.

How to bed in eMTB brakes step by step
1. Start with moderate-speed slowdowns
Accelerate to a controlled speed, then use one brake to slow firmly to walking pace. Apply progressive pressure without locking the wheel. Release before the bike stops completely so a hot pad is not clamped against one point on the rotor.
2. Repeat and let power build
Accelerate again and repeat the slowdown. The brake should become stronger and more consistent as the transfer layer develops. Do not chase heat with frantic back-to-back skids; smooth repetition is the point.
3. Add the manufacturer’s higher-speed stops
Many procedures finish with a smaller number of harder slowdowns from a higher speed. Follow the precise brake manual. SRAM’s official explanation says new pads and rotors need bedding before full performance; Magura’s performance guide specifies repeated braking from roughly 20–25km/h down to 5km/h and tells riders to bed each brake separately.
4. Bed the second brake
Once the first brake feels consistent, repeat the correct sequence for the other. Rear-wheel traction is easier to break, especially on a powerful eMTB, so stay smooth and avoid skidding.
5. Allow the system to cool
Roll gently or stop in a safe place without holding a hot brake on. Inspect for rubbing, discolouration, looseness or leaks before heading to a steep trail.

Skidding the tyre
A locked wheel reduces controlled friction at the pad and rotor, damages tyres and teaches little about braking power. Use a clean progressive squeeze.
Dragging the brake continuously

Contaminating the rotor
Do not touch the braking track with bare oily fingers. Clean the drivetrain separately and shield the rotor from aerosol products. If a pad has absorbed oil, bedding harder is not a cure.
Mixing pad compounds without preparation

How do you know the brakes are bedded in?
The power should build predictably from the same lever pressure, with a consistent bite rather than a grabby or polished feel. Some noise in wet conditions is normal, but persistent weak braking, pulsing or severe squeal needs inspection rather than more aggressive stops.
