A loose MTB headset usually announces itself with a knock under braking, vague steering or a small movement at the head tube. The fix is often straightforward, but the order matters: the top cap sets bearing preload, while the stem clamp bolts secure the stem to the steerer. If anything is cracked, badly corroded or still loose after correct adjustment, stop riding and have the bike inspected.

How to confirm headset play

Apply the front brake, place the fingers of your other hand across the gap between the upper headset cover and frame, then rock the bike gently backwards and forwards. Align the stem with the front wheel, then tighten the steerer-clamp bolts evenly to the marked or manufacturer-specified torque. Use a suitable torque wrench, particularly with carbon components. Recheck for play after tightening.

Why a headset keeps coming loose

Repeated play can come from a compressed or incomplete spacer stack, a damaged star nut or compression plug, worn bearings, an incorrectly fitted crown race or a steerer cut too long. The top of the steerer normally needs to sit slightly below the upper spacer or stem so the top cap can create preload.
