Learning how to transport an eMTB safely starts with one number: the carrier’s maximum permitted load. A modern full-power electric mountain bike can weigh 23–27kg before mud, bottles and accessories are added. Two of them can exceed the capacity of a roof rack or an older towbar carrier long before anything looks obviously overloaded.
The safest setup is usually an e-bike-rated towbar platform with a realistic per-bike limit, enough spacing for wide bars and long wheelbases, and a ramp if lifting is difficult. The rack, towbar nose-weight limit, vehicle limit and individual wheel tray all matter. The lowest figure in that chain is the one that controls the load.
Weigh the bike as it will be carried
Manufacturer bike weights are often quoted for one frame size and may exclude pedals. Add pedals, bottle cages, mudguards, lights, tools and wet dirt and the real figure rises. Use bathroom scales if necessary: weigh yourself, then repeat while holding the bike and subtract the first number.


If the battery is removable, taking it out can reduce the rack load by roughly 3–4.5kg depending on the system. That can bring a bike inside the carrier limit, make lifting safer and prevent the battery being exposed to prolonged spray. Removing a display or other detachable electronics may also be sensible, following the bike manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not remove the battery simply to disguise an overloaded frame. The remaining bike must still sit within the rack’s individual tray limit, and the total rack load must remain below the carrier, towbar and vehicle limits.
Why roof racks are rarely the best eMTB option
Some roof carriers accept heavy bikes, but lifting a 25kg eMTB above shoulder height creates its own risk. Battery removal helps, yet the rack and vehicle roof still need sufficient capacity. A tall eMTB also increases drag and can be forgotten at height barriers.
A towbar platform keeps the loading height lower and supports the wheels rather than hanging the full bike from its frame. It is normally the more manageable choice for full-power machines. Boot-mounted racks are often unsuitable because their total and per-bike limits were designed around lighter bikes, and the straps and contact points can interact badly with spoilers and complex tailgates.


Check wheelbase, tyre width and frame contact
Long modern eMTBs can overhang short wheel trays, while 2.5–2.8in tyres may not sit correctly in narrow road-bike channels. Check the maximum wheelbase, tyre width and strap length before buying a rack. A bike that technically fits the weight limit can still be unstable if the wheels do not sit fully in their supports.
Carbon frames and unusually shaped downtubes need particular care. Use the carrier manufacturer’s approved carbon protector or a rack that clamps the wheels rather than crushing the frame. Never tighten a clamp onto cables, brake hoses, the battery cover or a thin carbon tube simply because it is the easiest place to reach.
Dropper posts should normally be lowered to reduce saddle height, but the clamp must not squeeze the moving stanchion. Secure loose straps and check that handlebars, forks and pedals cannot rub against the next bike.
Loading an eMTB step by step
- Park on level ground. Apply the handbrake and make sure there is space behind the vehicle.
- Confirm the rack is locked and fully deployed. Check its indicator or coupling mechanism exactly as the manufacturer describes.
- Remove approved items. Take off the battery, display, bottles and loose accessories where the bike manual permits.
- Load the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle. This generally reduces leverage on the carrier, unless the rack instructions specify otherwise.
- Use a loading ramp if available. Push the bike while controlling both brakes rather than twisting through a dead lift.
- Secure the main clamp, then both wheels. Follow the rack’s order and torque guidance; do not improvise with one loose strap.
- Check clearance. Bars, pedals and forks should not touch the car, and one bike should not saw into another over bumps.
- Fit the lighting board and number plate. Rear lights and the registration mark must remain visible.
Keep the battery protected inside the vehicle
A removed lithium-ion battery is heavy and should not be allowed to roll around the boot. Switch it off, keep the contacts dry and use the manufacturer’s transport cover or a padded, restrained position away from metal tools. Do not leave it in direct sun inside a hot vehicle, and do not transport a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking or has suffered a serious impact.
A cool, dry cabin or boot is normally preferable to hours of motorway spray on the rack. Refit the battery only after checking that the bike’s contacts and battery compartment are clean and dry. Follow the system maker’s instructions because locking mechanisms differ between Bosch, Shimano, Specialized, DJI and other systems.
Number plates, lights and overhangs in the UK
If the loaded bikes obscure the vehicle’s registration plate or rear lights, use an illuminated lighting board carrying the correct registration number. Do not hang a handwritten plate from the frame. The board must reproduce the required rear lights and indicators and connect correctly to the vehicle.
The driver is responsible for the load. It must be secured so that it is unlikely to fall or create danger, and it must not block the driver’s view or conceal required lights and markings. Very wide handlebars can project beyond the vehicle body, so check the complete loaded width rather than only the rack.

Check the rack again after the first few miles
Stop somewhere safe after 10–15 minutes and check every clamp and wheel strap. New straps can settle, tyres can compress into trays and bikes can move enough to bring bars or pedals into contact. Repeat the check at fuel, charging or food stops.
Remove heavy mud before the return journey. It adds weight, hides damage and can make straps slip. At home, rinse road salt and dirty spray from the rack and bike, then inspect battery contacts before charging.
Security while travelling
Carrier locks are useful for preventing casual removal, but they should not be treated as the only defence for a high-value eMTB. Add a suitable independent lock through the frame and a fixed part of the carrier where this can be done without creating road danger.
Avoid leaving bikes unattended on a rack, particularly overnight or at motorway services. Check the wording of your insurance policy: some cover requires a specific lock standard, and vehicle or rack exclusions can apply.
