Nicolai R20 MGU AON Edition: 200mm e-downhill bike revealed

The Nicolai R20 MGU AON Edition takes a simple, slightly unhinged question seriously: what happens if a World Cup-style downhill bike can pedal itself back to the top? The answer is a limited-production 200mm e-downhill machine built around the Pinion Motor.Gearbox.Unit, a Gates belt and much of the geometry and rear-suspension thinking used by the Gamux Sego race bike.

This is not a conventional enduro eMTB with a longer fork. Nicolai, Gamux and AON Racing have created a 29in-front, 27.5in-rear bike with 200mm of travel at both ends, a 63.3-degree head angle and a stated weight of 29.5kg. It is intended to descend like a proper downhill bike, then climb back for another run without waiting for an uplift truck.

A downhill chassis built around the motor and gearbox

The rear end is derived from the CNC-machined 7075 aluminium structure, geometry and kinematics of the Gamux Sego. Nicolai then developed a dedicated aluminium main frame around Pinion’s MGU and the battery. A high-pivot, linkage-driven single-pivot layout delivers the 200mm rear travel, with the axle initially moving rearward as the suspension compresses.

That layout is designed to help the wheel move with hard, repeated impacts rather than hang up on square edges. A Manitou Dorado Pro LTD inverted fork provides 200mm at the front, while a Manitou Mara air shock controls the rear. The adjustable forward shock mount allows geometry changes rather than locking the owner into one setting.

The mixed-wheel format is familiar from modern downhill racing. A 29in front wheel brings rollover and stability, while the 27.5in rear helps create clearance and keeps the bike easier to move through steep turns.

Pinion MGU removes the rear derailleur

The Pinion system combines the motor and 12-speed gearbox in one central unit. Drive reaches the rear wheel through a Gates Carbon belt, removing the exposed derailleur and cassette from the back of the bike. On a downhill machine, where the rear wheel is repeatedly fired into rocks and braking bumps, that is a particularly logical place to reduce vulnerable unsprung hardware.

Pinion quotes up to 600W peak power and as much as 160Nm in the lower gears, with assistance up to 400 per cent. Those numbers are not intended to chase the Avinox motor in a headline-power contest; the point is the integration of assistance and shifting, with Smart.Shift timing gear changes within the sealed unit.

The standard battery is 800Wh, while a 1,060Wh option adds €200 to the listed price. Both packs use Panasonic 21700 cells and are removable. The larger battery is an extraordinary amount of capacity for repeat-lap riding, although it pushes an already substantial machine further away from normal trail-bike weight.

Race-team parts and a limited order window

The R20 specification closely follows AON Racing’s equipment partners. Alongside the silver-anodised Dorado Pro LTD fork and Mara shock are Hayes Dominion brakes, downhill-ready wheels and tyres, and components selected around repeated gravity use rather than showroom weight.

Pricing starts at €14,999 including 19 per cent German VAT with the 800Wh battery, rising to €15,199 for the 1,060Wh version. Nicolai and its partners opened the limited order window on 19 August 2026 and plan to close it on 30 September 2026. UK buyers would need to confirm final import pricing, VAT, delivery and support directly because no UK retail price has been announced.

That price and the specialist purpose make the R20 a small-series engineering statement rather than the next mass-market eMTB. It is also worth stressing that 200mm travel and downhill equipment do not make every climb or trail appropriate. Access rules, trail direction and local e-bike policies still apply; a self-uplift bike does not grant permission to ride closed downhill tracks uphill.

Why the Nicolai R20 MGU matters

The interesting part is not whether many riders will spend nearly €15,000 on one. The R20 shows what becomes possible when the motor, gearbox and suspension are treated as one chassis problem instead of fitting an e-bike drive system around a familiar derailleur layout.

Moving the gears into the centre reduces exposed hardware at the rear wheel, centralises mass and allows the high-pivot suspension to be developed around a belt. Those ideas could have wider relevance to hard-ridden enduro eMTBs, even if the 29.5kg R20 itself remains deliberately extreme.

For now, the Nicolai R20 MGU AON Edition is best understood as a downhill bike with a built-in return ticket. It is expensive, heavy and gloriously specific—and that clarity of purpose is exactly what makes it more interesting than another broadly capable 160mm eMTB.
