Project321 G3Ti hubs target the demands of powerful eMTBs

Project321 has launched the G3Ti, a titanium-driver rear hub aimed at the growing loads from powerful eMTB motors. Announced on 16 September, it puts the spotlight on a less glamorous part of the power race: the mechanism that has to turn assistance and pedal effort into forward motion.

The new hub is available to preorder, with Project321 expecting shipments in mid-October. For UK riders considering a wheel upgrade, the interesting changes are inside the freehub and at the brake mount, rather than another headline engagement figure.

What changes with the Project321 G3Ti?

The freehub body is the part that carries the cassette. G3Ti replaces the aluminium driver used on the standard G3 with titanium, and increases the number of pawls engaging together from two to four. Those pawls are the small catches that connect the freehub to the hub shell when you pedal.

Project321 retains its magnet-operated M-Pulse mechanism. A 72-tooth drive ring and two phased groups of pawls produce 144 engagement positions, or 2.5 degrees between engagements. That figure describes movement at the freehub; it is not a promise of an identical amount of movement at your cranks in every gear.

There is also a revised bearing arrangement and a two-piece seal intended to keep contamination outside the drive mechanism. These are manufacturer design claims, rather than evidence from a UK winter durability test.

Compatibility matters as much as strength

G3Ti comes with conventional six-bolt or Center Lock rotor mounts. Project321 says this addresses compatibility with e-bike speed-sensor systems that do not always work with its 6-Lock arrangement. Choosing the right rotor mount is still only one check: the bike’s specific magnet, sensor position, axle spacing and cassette must also match.

The driver options cover Shimano HG, Micro Spline and SRAM XD. Project321 also says its titanium drivers can fit existing G3 and RG3 hubs, potentially giving owners an upgrade route without rebuilding an otherwise serviceable wheel. Confirm the correct conversion parts for the exact hub before ordering.

Why it matters for eMTBs

Before choosing a replacement, check our HG, Micro Spline and XD compatibility guide. A stronger hub cannot prevent every drivetrain problem. Shifting technique, chain condition and the load applied through the selected gear still matter, as our eMTB drivetrain wear explainer covers. For riders comparing Avinox-powered eMTBs, this launch is a useful reminder to look beyond the motor when assessing the complete bike.

UK G3Ti pricing and local delivery dates have not been confirmed in the launch information. The relevant question for a replacement wheel is whether its hub, rim, spokes and intended-use rating suit the whole bike and rider, rather than whether one component has the largest number on its specification sheet.
