Intradrive GD8 enters production: Scottish gearbox eMTBs move closer

Intradrive has moved its GD8 motor-and-gearbox system into UK series production, bringing a Scottish alternative to the familiar motor, cassette and rear derailleur closer to production eMTBs. The announcement, dated 8 October, names Obscur and Alutech as its first bike partners at Roc d’Azur.

The immediate milestone is delivery to bike manufacturers, rather than a confirmed date for bikes arriving in UK shops. Intradrive says the first units will reach its partners from December 2026. Its first production run includes 70 firm orders.

Eight gears protected inside the bike

The GD8 combines electric assistance with eight electronically selected ratios in a sealed central unit. Intradrive lists a 480% gear range, sequential shifting with automatic downshifting, and shifts taking approximately 0.1 seconds. Its published figures are 250W rated power, 700W peak and a 4.5kg system weight.

That weight includes the gearbox, so it should not be compared directly with the weight of a conventional motor alone. The system can drive the rear wheel using either a chain or a belt. Battery capacity depends on the bike manufacturer’s chosen installation.

Why this matters on wet UK trails

Moving the gears away from the back wheel removes the exposed derailleur and cassette from the equation. For owners dealing with bent hangers or repeated drivetrain replacement, that is a meaningful change in what needs looking after. Our eMTB drivetrain wear guide explains the maintenance costs of a conventional chain-and-cassette system.

Intradrive specifies gearbox oil changes every 10,000km. That is a manufacturer service interval, not a promise that a complete bike needs no maintenance. Bearings, brakes, tyres and the final chain or belt still need attention. Real-world running costs will depend on service access and replacement-part support as well as the sealed gearing.

Obscur and Alutech are the first partners

The brand’s launch announcement describes an Obscur all-mountain bike with a French-made carbon frame, mixed wheel sizes, 150mm rear travel, a 160mm fork and a removable 840Wh battery. Alutech’s ePelmo GD8 uses an aluminium frame and Gates belt drive.

The GD8 bike is a separate development from the Alutech ePelmo X1P already covered here. A shared ePelmo name does not make their powertrains interchangeable.

UK availability is the next question

Intradrive says the mounting interface matches Shimano EP8, giving manufacturers a starting point for frame integration. That does not establish an owner-approved retrofit: battery, controls, wiring, drivetrain and frame clearance all form part of the complete system.

A confirmed UK retailer, complete-bike price and local servicing arrangements will matter more to buyers than the production announcement alone. For now, the GD8 is a credible manufacturing milestone to watch, with partner deliveries ahead of any established UK retail timetable.
