1. Set the lever’s position along the handlebar
Loosen the clamp only enough for the lever to slide. Sit or stand in the normal descending position and extend the index finger. The hooked end of the blade should meet the finger naturally, without dragging the hand inboard or forcing the fingertip to brake.
Modern MTB brakes are usually intended for one-finger use. Moving the lever inboard leaves the middle, ring and little fingers securely around the grip. 2. Find a neutral brake-lever angle

If it points too steeply downward, the hand can slide towards the end of the grip and the lever becomes harder to reach on flatter ground.


There is no universal degree measurement. Begin with the blade following the line of the forearm in an attack position, then test the bike on a familiar descent. Set both sides symmetrically unless a medical or ergonomic reason requires otherwise, and tighten the clamps to the exact handlebar and brake instructions.
3. Adjust brake-lever reach
Reach changes the blade’s resting distance from the grip. Bring the lever close enough that the first joint of the index finger can hook the blade without the hand rolling forward, but leave enough clearance that the lever cannot contact the other fingers or handlebar under hard braking.
Some brakes use a tool-free dial and others a small hex key. Direction varies by model, so follow the marking or manual rather than forcing the adjuster. SRAM separates reach from contact-point adjustment; changing reach positions the blade, while contact point changes how far the lever travels before the pads engage. Shimano’s manual library should be searched by the exact lever model because adjuster type and safe procedure differ.
4. Set contact point only if the brake provides it
Contact point, sometimes called bite point, alters where pad engagement occurs in the lever stroke. It does not repair air in the system, a warped rotor, worn pads or a poor bleed. Set reach first, then make small contact-point changes until both brakes engage predictably without the blade approaching the bar.
A very early bite can feel immediate but leave less modulation; a later bite gives more lever movement but must retain safe clearance. Not every brake includes this adjustment. Do not turn an unidentified screw simply because it is near the lever pivot.


5. Check clamp security and control clearance
Cycle the handlebar fully left and right. Hoses and cables must not tighten, snag the display or pull on the lever. Check that shifters, the dropper remote and motor controller remain reachable without releasing the grip. Tighten clamp bolts in the maker’s sequence with a suitable torque wrench.
Some riders leave a lever clamp just loose enough to rotate in a crash, hoping to prevent blade damage. Do that only when the manufacturer explicitly permits it. A moving brake lever is a safety problem, and carbon handlebars can be damaged by incorrect clamp load.
6. Perform a static safety check
- Squeeze each lever firmly several times; the feel should remain consistent
- Confirm neither blade can touch the grip or trap another finger
- Check the caliper does not leak and the rotor is not cracked or badly deformed
- Confirm the wheel turns freely when the brake is released
- Recheck every clamp and control before riding
